When I worked for web consultancy VISION Consulting as a web / Flash designer, one of our major clients was the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). This simple game was part of pitch we put together to drive more users to their website. With another layer of polish and some new sounds and mechanics, I think this game had the makings of something interesting, but the client ultimately went a different direction.

I was in the process of making a Flash penalty shootout game when Ireland were dumped out of the 2002 World Cup by Spain. I quickly reskinned the characters and released the game as ‘Suwon Shootout’, giving Irish football fans a chance to rewrite history. The game caught the imagination of the public, and the game attracted some 7,000 uniques per day for a period of several weeks.

Looking back on the project nearly 10 years later (where do it go?) there’s some things I would definitely do differently, and I think the control mechanism is too clumsy and complicated. However, it was pretty ambitious at the time, and I’m proud of it!

As a massive fan of the old Konami Star Wars arcade game, I was keen to try to recreate it in Flash. Utilising the help of my friend Paul Lynch (coding genius), we spent a couple of months creating ‘Red 5′. It’s an unofficial, unapproved, unsanctioned homage to the Star Wars movies and films. So far I haven’t had a cease and desist letter from Mr. Lucas, but the game did get a lot of interest from the gaming public (bringing in over 10,000 uniques per day in it’s first few months).

The high score tables are no longer online due to the costs of maintaining servers for high traffic.

IRFU ‘Club Locator’ Web Application

  • Role: Lead Web Designer
  • www.irishrugby.ie
  • Part of a large project I worked on for the Irish Rugby Football Union, this Flash mini-application was my solution for the customer problem of finding specific rugby clubs across the nation. It needed to allow the user to find a club by name, or geographic location (most clubs being clustered around three key regions). The club names were located in a dynamic text file (no longer online).

  • Pumpkin Beach was an interesting attempt at a browser-based MMO created in Flash. Unfortunately, the initiative didn’t see the light of day.

My role within the team was creating Flash animations for the HUD elements and front-end (here, the bar and components at the bottom of the screen).

Given my extensive experience with Flash, I also spent a lot of my time advising the project technical team and artists in the best methods of asset creation and workflow.

  • This is a concept of personal project that I’ve been working on for a while. It started as a Flash game using randomly placed background tiles, and I’ve recently been experimenting with iPhone implementation. Watch this space for updates.
